Unlike generic packaging rules, pallet quality standards cover both the physical characteristics of pallets – dimensions, materials, load capacity – and the phytosanitary or hygiene requirements that apply in international trade. ISO 6780 defines standard dimensions for flat pallets, with the most common European formats being 1200 × 800 mm (EUR pallet) and 1200 × 1000 mm, alongside material and load specifications. Wooden pallets crossing international borders must be heat-treated and stamped in accordance with the IPPC standard (International Plant Protection Convention) to prevent the spread of timber pests. A missing IPPC mark is a practical priority for freight forwarders and customs teams: border authorities may delay or reject an entire shipment on that basis alone. Industries such as food and pharmaceuticals impose additional hygiene requirements that go beyond ISO 6780, frequently mandating plastic pallets with smooth, easily sanitised surfaces.
