The practice is standard in EUR-pallet networks because it removes the need for separate empty runs and keeps the pallet cycle moving without delay. Exchanged pallets must be in sound, norm-compliant condition – damaged ones are typically refused or settled separately. When no matching empty is available on the spot, a pallet credit is recorded and offset at a later date. Freight forwarders document the exchange status on the delivery note or a dedicated pallet slip.
