Unlike general packaging guidelines, packing instructions are binding requirements defined by international dangerous goods regulations. Depending on the mode of transport, the applicable frameworks are the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) for air freight, the IMDG Code for sea freight, and ADR/RID for road and rail respectively. Each packing instruction specifies which packaging types and inner receptacles are permitted, the maximum quantities allowed per package, and the markings and documentation required. Shippers and freight forwarders identify the correct instruction by cross-referencing the UN number and hazard class of the cargo.
