Packaging certification confirms that a packaging solution will not fail under defined transport stresses—vibration, compression, and temperature fluctuations—ensuring goods arrive undamaged. The applicable standard depends on the cargo type: UN packaging regulations for dangerous goods, ISTA test protocols for general transport packaging, and IATA or IMO requirements for air and sea freight. Accredited laboratories subject samples to real or simulated conditions and issue a test certificate upon successful completion. For hazardous materials, pharmaceuticals, and perishables, certification is mandatory—customs authorities and carriers require it as a compulsory document. It should not be confused with country-specific export packaging regulations, which may additionally cover labelling requirements and timber treatment standards such as ISPM 15.
