Forwarders, distribution centers, and consignees rely on it to identify every package uniquely and trace its journey through the supply chain. Depending on the standard applied – GS1 or SSCC, for example – the label may carry the shipment number, weight, delivery address, or hazard class. Missing or incorrect labels cause misrouting, delays, and additional handling costs. Distinct from shipping label standardization, which governs cross-company format specifications, package labeling refers specifically to the marking step within the dispatch process.
