When a forwarder accepts a consignment, the first step is counting the packages: a package is a single, self-contained shipping unit – a carton, sack, crate, pallet or any load carrier that constitutes one discrete, countable item. The package count is a mandatory entry on transport documents such as the bill of lading, air waybill or packing list. It says nothing about total weight or volume; ten light cartons may weigh less than one heavy crate. In LTL freight, the package count combined with gross weight and dimensions forms the basis for rate calculation and customs declaration. It should not be confused with the consignment as a whole, which groups multiple packages under a single contract of carriage.
