Owner's risk cargo insurance gives shippers and consignees coverage for loss or damage to their goods during transit, independent of whatever liability the carrier may bear. Standard carrier liability regimes — CMR for road transport, the Hague-Visby Rules for sea freight, IATA limits for air — cap compensation at fixed amounts per kilogram, which rarely reflects actual commercial value. By taking out their own policy, cargo owners secure full replacement value and avoid protracted disputes over carrier fault. This coverage is particularly critical for high-value goods, temperature-sensitive cargo and complex multimodal shipments. It should not be confused with freight liability insurance, which protects the carrier rather than the owner of the goods.
