# Outbound packing list

> Unlike a commercial invoice, which records prices and contract terms, an outbound packing list documents the physical contents of a shipment.

Unlike a commercial invoice, which records prices and contract terms, an outbound packing list documents the physical contents of a shipment. It lists each line item with part number, quantity, weight, and dimensions, and assigns goods to their respective packaging units, cases, or pallets. Freight forwarders, warehouse staff, and customs authorities use the document to verify the completeness of a delivery and cross-check cargo data. For cross-border shipments, the packing list is routinely submitted as part of the customs declaration and serves as the primary evidence for insurance claims in the event of damage or loss. It should not be confused with a retail packing slip—the outbound packing list is a B2B shipping document.
