Without a unique reference, an export declaration cannot be tracked or controlled within the customs system – that reference is the MRN, or Movement Reference Number. It is generated automatically once an export declaration has been electronically submitted and accepted by customs. Within the EU, ATLAS produces the MRN for export procedures; for transit movements, it is issued by the NCTS (New Computerised Transit System). The MRN allows customs authorities, freight forwarders, and exporters to query shipment status and retrieve the exit confirmation. It also serves as the key proof of export for VAT exemption purposes.
