The order picking process is triggered the moment a customer order enters the warehouse management system: items are identified, a retrieval route is calculated, and a picker or automated system physically assembles the goods. Quality checks, packing, and shipment preparation follow as downstream steps. Depending on order volume and warehouse layout, operators choose between single-order picking, batch picking, or zone picking. Picking consistently ranks among the most labour-intensive stages in warehouse operations and accounts for a substantial share of total logistics costs. It should not be confused with the order picking method, which describes the underlying physical principle – such as man-to-goods or goods-to-man.
