An Out of Gauge (OOG) surcharge is an additional charge applied to cargo that exceeds the dimensions or weight limits of standard shipping containers and therefore requires special handling. Typical OOG freight includes industrial machinery, wind turbine components, and construction equipment, which must be lashed to flat-rack or open-top units and stowed on deck rather than in cellular holds. Carriers impose the surcharge to recover costs for additional lashing labour, scarce deck positions, and occasional rerouting. Rates are calculated per unit or voyage and differ considerably depending on the degree of overage and the destination port. The OOG surcharge focuses on dimensional excess; where weight alone is the issue, a separate heavy lift surcharge typically applies.
