Onshore Power Supply (OPS) is a standardised technical infrastructure system that provides berthed vessels with electricity from the port's shore-side grid, eliminating the need to run auxiliary engines during a port call. The system encompasses shore-side substations, frequency converters, high-capacity cabling, connection boxes, and internationally harmonised interface standards. Unlike the colloquial term shore power, which typically refers to the electricity supply as a service, OPS denotes the complete engineering and infrastructure solution. The EU's Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) sets binding deployment targets for major seaports and inland ports.
