The term covers the shipping lane running along Russia's Arctic coast between the Bering Strait and the Barents Sea, linking East Asia with Northern Europe and cutting the distance substantially compared with the traditional Suez Canal routing. Sailings are heavily seasonal and largely confined to the low-ice summer and autumn months, requiring ice-strengthened tonnage and frequently icebreaker escort. Transit permissions are administered by Russian authorities, which adds sanctions and insurance questions on top of ice and weather risk. Not to be confused with the Northwest Passage through the Canadian archipelago.
