Freight forwarders, customs declarants, and warehouse operators rely on net weight daily: the weight of the goods themselves, excluding all packaging, pallets, wrapping film, and loading aids. It is derived by subtracting the tare weight – the weight of the packaging alone – from the gross weight, which covers the goods together with all their packaging. Net weight is a mandatory field in customs declarations, as duties and import charges under many tariff headings are assessed on this figure. It is equally relevant for freight invoicing, product labelling under food or packaging regulations, and stock records. Net weight should not be confused with the unladen weight of a vehicle or container, which is referred to separately in transport contexts.
