> Unlike a purely local reference, the NCTS Movement Reference Number (MRN) is a system-wide unique alphanumeric identifier assigned to each individual transit movement from the office of departure to the office of destination.

Unlike a purely local reference, the NCTS Movement Reference Number (MRN) is a system-wide unique alphanumeric identifier assigned to each individual transit movement from the office of departure to the office of destination. NCTS generates it automatically as soon as customs accepts the transit declaration. The declarant or freight forwarder receives the MRN immediately upon acceptance and must carry it on the Transit Accompanying Document (TAD) and quote it in all official correspondence. Goods may not leave the office of departure without a valid MRN. It therefore serves as the central tracking instrument in the electronic transit procedure, allowing customs offices along the route to retrieve the current procedural status in real time.
