# NCTS control indicator

> The NCTS control indicator is an electronic data element within the New Computerized Transit System (NCTS) that records, for each transit consignment, whether a customs control took place and what form it took – physical examination, documentary check, or no control at all.

The NCTS control indicator is an electronic data element within the New Computerized Transit System (NCTS) that records, for each transit consignment, whether a customs control took place and what form it took – physical examination, documentary check, or no control at all. All customs offices involved in the transit can view this status, enabling coordinated risk treatment along the route. For freight forwarders and shippers, the indicator matters in practice: when it flags a control, potential delays need to be factored into transit planning. The indicator thus serves both as an audit trail for customs administrations and as a status signal for transport operators. In Switzerland, transit movements have since 1 May 2024 no longer been handled via a separate NCTS front-end but exclusively through the BAZG goods-traffic system Passar (transit declaration); Passar 1.0 implements the EU NCTS Phase 5 message format.
