Within the New Computerized Transit System (NCTS), every transit case is identified by a unique alphanumeric reference and tracked from declaration to final discharge. In practice this is the MRN (Movement Reference Number), assigned when the transit declaration is accepted and shown on the transit accompanying document; the label "Community Reference Number (CRN)" is used synonymously in older documentation, but the MRN is the authoritative identifier in NCTS. The reference documents the complete movement history of a transit, including status changes, control measures, and releases by the customs offices involved, and facilitates cross-authority inquiries when transit movements span multiple customs territories. In Switzerland it is maintained in the BAZG system Passar under the common transit procedure (CTC) or national transit procedure and serves as proof of discharge and in cases of irregularities or guarantee calls.
