A Named Bill of Lading – also called a straight bill of lading – enters the picture when the seller wants cargo delivered exclusively to a specific, identified consignee, with no possibility of the document changing hands in transit. Unlike an order bill of lading, it cannot be endorsed or transferred: only the party named on its face is entitled to take delivery. This non-negotiability limits its commercial flexibility but gives the shipper firm control over the final recipient. Named bills are typically used in transactions between established business partners, within corporate groups, or wherever documentary credit security is not required. In air freight, the airway bill (AWB) operates on the same principle by default – always non-negotiable and addressed to a named consignee.
