Unlike mode-specific transport documents – the air waybill (AWB), the ocean bill of lading (B/L), or the CMR consignment note – a Multimodal Transport Document (MTD) consolidates all carriage legs under a single legal instrument. Issued by a freight forwarder or multimodal operator (often acting as NVOCC), it gives the shipper one document covering the entire journey from origin to final delivery, with no need for fresh paperwork at each modal handover. Liability rests with the MTD issuer throughout, giving the consignee a single point of responsibility for damage or delay claims. Modern MTD systems are increasingly paperless, integrating with customs, track-and-trace, and payment platforms to cut processing time and error rates. The MTD should not be confused with the FIATA Negotiable Multimodal Transport Bill of Lading (FBL), which follows the same principles but is governed by specific FIATA standard trading conditions.
