A multimodal transport contract covers the entire journey from origin to final destination under a single agreement with one operator, combining at least two modes of transport. The shipper contracts exclusively with the multimodal transport operator (MTO), who issues a single transport document and bears full liability for the whole chain, regardless of which sub-carrier causes a loss. This single-operator model eliminates the need to coordinate separate contracts at each modal interchange. It differs from a unimodal contract in that the MTO's responsibility does not end at a port or terminal gate — it extends door to door. The arrangement is particularly common in containerised trade, where sea, rail, and road legs are routinely combined under one bill of lading.
