# Movement Reference Number (MRN)

> The Movement Reference Number (MRN) is the unique reference number that the customs system automatically assigns to a customs declaration when it is opened.

The Movement Reference Number (MRN) is the unique reference number that the customs system automatically assigns to a customs declaration when it is opened. In plain terms, it is the "licence plate" of a specific declaration, allowing a consignment to be uniquely identified and tracked in the system. The MRN is 18 characters long (alphanumeric) and is additionally printed as a barcode on the accompanying document, for example the transit accompanying document.

For professionals (freight forwarders, hauliers, customs agents, drivers): in the Swiss Passar goods traffic system the MRN of a goods declaration (in transit and in export) must be linked (referenced) to a transport declaration so that the declaration is activated and the procedure is opened. One transport declaration can bundle several goods declarations via their MRN or GDRN. In the common transit procedure (CTP/NCTS) the MRN is the number of the transit procedure; the transit accompanying document, i.e. the MRN with barcode, must be presented at the border crossing and at the office of destination to end the procedure. Under the same standard the EU provides an MRN follow-up (status enquiry).

Distinction: the MRN identifies the movement or declaration, whereas the GDRN (Goods Declaration Reference Number) is the reference of the goods declaration in the national Passar context; not to be confused with the assessment decision (eVV), which is only created as legally valid proof after assessment.
