# Movement Reference Number

> Unlike an internal shipment reference assigned by a freight forwarder, the Movement Reference Number (MRN) is an official customs identifier: a unique 18-character alphanumeric code automatically generated when a customs declaration is accepted by the customs authority – whether for a transit procedure (T1/T2 under NCTS), an export declaration, or another customs regime.

Unlike an internal shipment reference assigned by a freight forwarder, the Movement Reference Number (MRN) is an official customs identifier: a unique 18-character alphanumeric code automatically generated when a customs declaration is accepted by the customs authority – whether for a transit procedure (T1/T2 under NCTS), an export declaration, or another customs regime. It appears on the accompanying document, such as the Transit Accompanying Document (TAD) or Export Accompanying Document (EAD), linking the office of departure, any transit offices, and the office of destination to a single declaration record. Until the procedure is formally discharged under the correct MRN, it remains open and the principal's guarantee stays blocked. Customs agents and freight forwarders query the MRN in NCTS or national export systems to confirm that goods have arrived and the procedure is closed.
