The mode of transport defines the physical pathway and technical system by which goods travel from origin to destination, directly shaping a shipment's transit time, cost, and carbon footprint. Freight logistics recognises five principal modes: road (truck), rail, sea, air, and pipeline; inland waterway transport is often counted as a sixth mode, particularly in European and Asian contexts. Freight forwarders select the appropriate mode based on shipment weight, volume, delivery deadlines, dangerous goods classification, and the infrastructure available at each end. Multimodal or intermodal chains frequently combine two or more modes under a single transport contract. In regulatory and contractual usage, 'mode of transport' denotes the category or system – not the specific vehicle deployed on a given journey.
