Freight forwarders apply MIT primarily in multi-vendor e-commerce fulfilment and retail replenishment, consolidating several less-than-truckload (LTL) moves into one complete order. The method cuts warehousing costs and reduces lead times, but it demands precise shipment synchronisation: every inbound leg must arrive within the same narrow time window, or the entire delivery is delayed. MIT is distinct from traditional cross-docking in that the merge specifically serves to combine supplier-side flows into a single customer order rather than simply sorting bulk freight.
