That volume advantage is decisive for light, bulky goods such as packaging materials, paper, or furniture, which hit their cubic limit well before their weight limit. On long-haul routes across Europe, the cost per cubic metre of freight drops without exceeding permissible gross weights or legal vehicle dimensions.
