Material Requirements Planning (MRP) gives manufacturers and procurement teams a systematic way to ensure the right materials arrive at the right time and in the right quantities. By processing production schedules, bills of materials, and current stock levels, the system calculates when and how much to order – factoring in supplier lead times and safety stock. This prevents both supply shortages and costly surplus inventory by aligning procurement with actual production demand. Most modern implementations are embedded in ERP platforms that can trigger purchase orders automatically. MRP should not be confused with MRP II (Manufacturing Resource Planning), which extends the logic to capacity and financial planning.
