Coverage is built around standard market clauses: all-risks policies offer the broadest protection against accidental loss or damage, while named-perils clauses respond only to specifically listed events such as fire, sinking, or stranding. War and strike risks are conventionally excluded and require separate endorsements. Premiums are calculated on the basis of the cargo's commercial value, its nature and packaging, the trade lane, and the claims history for comparable shipments. Under the Incoterms rules, the obligation to arrange insurance sits with the seller under CIF or CIP; under all other terms, the buyer typically arranges cover independently.
