The main haul is the long-distance segment of a transport chain on which goods move between two hubs in large load units. It sits between the pre-carriage leg (from shipper to first hub) and the on-carriage leg (from last hub to consignee). Carriers and forwarders deploy fully loaded trucks, block trains, container vessels, or freighter aircraft for this leg, since high load factors substantially reduce per-unit costs. In sea freight, the main haul corresponds to the ocean leg between port of loading and port of discharge; in air freight, to the flight between origin and destination airports. Clearly distinguishing all three transport legs is a prerequisite for accurate freight costing and for structuring subcontractor agreements.
