Loose container freight consolidation – widely known as LCL (less-than-container-load) consolidation – enters the picture when individual shippers lack sufficient cargo to fill a full container economically. A freight forwarder or terminal operator receives partial shipments from multiple principals at a Container Freight Station (CFS), sorts them by port of discharge, and stows the goods into a single shared container. At the destination, a de-consolidation terminal strips the container and releases each shipment to its consignee. LCL rates are typically quoted per cubic metre or weight tonne, keeping costs proportionate for smaller volumes; however, the additional stuffing and stripping operations at each end generally extend transit times compared to FCL. The service differs from road groupage in its CFS-based workflow and the maritime liability framework that governs each consignment.
