A shipment has arrived on time at the port – but the bank withholds payment under the letter of credit because the certificate of insurance is missing. A logistics certificate of insurance is a document issued by the insurer confirming that active transport coverage exists for a specific shipment or policyholder. It sets out the insurer's and insured party's names, the sum insured, the coverage period, and the perils covered, such as damage, theft, or total loss. In letter-of-credit transactions, banks routinely require it alongside the bill of lading and commercial invoice. Unlike the full policy wording, the certificate is a concise, transferable instrument – not to be confused with a cover note, which merely confirms that a policy exists rather than that a particular consignment is covered. In the event of a claim, it serves as the primary reference for establishing the insured's entitlement.
