A loading window is a defined time slot – set contractually or operationally – within which a truck, rail wagon, or container must be loaded or unloaded at a terminal, warehouse, or distribution centre. Facilities assign these slots to prevent dock congestion and to balance handling capacity across the day. Missing the allocated window typically results in waiting charges, loss of the booking, or a rescheduling fee. In ocean freight, loading windows are closely tied to container yard cutoff times: cargo must arrive before the gate closes to make the intended vessel sailing. Unlike free time or detention periods, a loading window refers to the scheduled handling interval, not to the maximum permitted dwell time of a unit.
