To ensure that shippers, drivers, and consignees share the same information base during loading and unloading, the loading list comes into play: it inventories all load units, packages, and goods in a consignment, recording type, quantity, weight, and often each item's position within the vehicle. In day-to-day freight operations, it serves to verify weight limits and space utilization during loading, provides cargo visibility in transit, and enables reconciliation with the consignee at the point of delivery. In intermodal transport – truck combined with rail or sea – a complete loading list speeds up customs clearance and simplifies damage claims. It should not be confused with the consignment note (CMR) or the air waybill (AWB), which document the contract of carriage; the loading list is an operational accompaniment without contractual standing.
