Unlike a fixed ramp, a loading dock actively compensates for the height difference between a warehouse floor and a truck's cargo bed, typically using a hydraulic or mechanical dock leveller. The vehicle reverses up to the dock, dock shelters seal the gap against dust and weather, and goods can then be moved at floor level using forklifts or pallet trucks. This sharply cuts turnaround times, reduces product damage and improves workplace safety. Loading docks are standard equipment in modern distribution centres; the number of dock positions and their utilisation rate directly determine a facility's throughput capacity.
