Load weight distribution standards define how cargo mass must be spread across a vehicle's axles and along the length and width of the load space to maintain driving stability and comply with legal axle weight limits. Exact thresholds are established by national road traffic regulations and differ by vehicle type, number of axles, and – in cross-border transport – by the law of each country transited. Off-center loading or excessive concentration on a single axle increases the risk of rollover and jackknifing, and can result in fines, vehicle impoundment, or driver liability. Both the shipper and the carrier share responsibility: weight distribution must be factored into the loading plan before the vehicle departs.
