Load planning is the systematic arrangement of cargo units inside a transport vehicle – truck, container, railcar, or aircraft – to maximise the use of available volume and payload capacity while ensuring cargo integrity and the correct unloading sequence. Weight, dimensions, stackability, hazardous goods classifications, and the number of delivery stops all determine where individual shipments are positioned. Effective load planning reduces cargo damage and cuts freight costs, since unused space translates directly into a higher cost per unit shipped. Dedicated load-planning software supports the process in day-to-day freight forwarding, particularly for full truckloads (FTL) and full container loads (FCL). It should not be confused with route planning, which concerns the sequence of delivery stops rather than the physical arrangement of goods within the vehicle.
