Load optimization goes well beyond simply filling a vehicle: it is the systematic planning of weight distribution, cubic utilization, stackability, and cargo restraint to reduce freight costs and minimize cargo damage. Forwarders and shippers use optimization software that calculates the best loading sequence and arrangement based on package dimensions, weights, and vehicle capacity. In practice this means intelligently combining different carton sizes, stacking pallets layer by layer, or consolidating part-loads from multiple consignors into a single trailer. Proper load optimization also ensures compliance with statutory axle and gross vehicle weight limits on public roads. It is conceptually distinct from cargo securing – which focuses on preventing load movement during transit – though the two are closely intertwined in daily operations.
