Freight forwarders, warehouse operators, and shippers use load carriers to consolidate goods into standardized, mechanically and manually manageable units for transport and storage. Common types include flat pallets (EUR pallet, industrial pallet), stillages, small load carriers (SLCs), and specialized containers. Load carriers standardize the interfaces between warehouse, vehicle, and consignee, reduce the risk of product damage through consistent stacking and securing, and cut loading and unloading times significantly. In pooling systems – such as the European pallet exchange – the same units circulate among multiple users, spreading costs across many journeys. The load carrier should not be confused with the transport unit itself: the load carrier holds the goods; the vehicle or container moves it.
