Unlike a simple weight tally, load calculation is a technical optimization task that simultaneously accounts for the dimensions of load units, center of gravity, permissible axle loads, and vehicle stability. In freight forwarding, it determines whether a shipment can move in a single vehicle, whether overloading is a risk, or whether additional trips are unavoidable. Modern transport management systems support the process with visual stowage plan tools that display stackability, awkward dimensions, and weight distribution at a glance. An incorrect calculation can result in road bans, fines for exceeding axle load limits, or cargo damage – with legal liability shared between shipper and carrier. Not to be confused with cargo space optimization, which focuses primarily on maximizing volumetric utilization: load calculation sets the legal boundaries within which optimization can take place.
