# Listing and Certification of Freight Containers

Reliable certification is what keeps freight containers safe for international transport: the CSC Convention (International Convention for Safe Containers) requires every container to be inspected for structural integrity, load-bearing capacity, and weathertightness before entering service, and to carry a CSC Safety Approval Plate issued by an accredited inspection body. Each unit is also assigned a unique identification number in accordance with the BIC code standard. The approval is time-limited and must be renewed periodically; expired or missing certification can result in port rejection or financial penalties. Shipping lines, shippers, and freight forwarders share responsibility for ensuring only currently certified units are used. Minimum structural requirements are set out in ISO 1496 – distinct from the separate approvals required for dangerous goods containers.
