# Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Carrier Regulations

When an LPG carrier calls at port or conducts offshore cargo operations, a binding international framework takes effect – first and foremost the IGC Code (International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk), adopted by the IMO. The Code sets mandatory minimum requirements for tank design, approved construction materials, pressure and temperature limits, and inspection and certification obligations. Crew competency standards for personnel serving on gas carriers are governed separately under the STCW Convention. Compliance is verified by national port authorities and recognised classification societies through periodic surveys and port state control (PSC) inspections. The IGC Code should not be confused with the IGF Code, which applies to ships using liquefied gas as bunker fuel rather than carrying it as cargo.
