Liner in/out contract clauses come into play at the port interface, allocating costs, time allowances, and liability for loading and discharging containers between the carrier and the shipper. They set free time limits and define when demurrage charges begin to accrue at the terminal, as well as when detention fees apply once a container leaves the port gate and is not returned within the agreed period. The distinction matters: demurrage is a terminal cost, detention an off-dock cost. The applicable Incoterm shifts the boundary of obligations significantly – FOB, CIF, and CPT each produce a different cost split between seller, buyer, and carrier. Freight forwarders review these clauses closely before signing any service contract, as miscalculated demurrage can quickly erode cargo margins.
