LIFO appears most frequently in liner trades where the carrier controls standardised loading operations at origin but discharge arrangements vary by destination terminal. It differs from FIO (Free In and Out), under which the charterer pays for both ends, and from FILO (Free In Liner Out), where the responsibilities are reversed: the charterer pays for loading and the carrier covers discharge.
