ULDs consolidate general cargo, shipments, and baggage into standardized units that lock securely into lower-deck or main-deck positions within minutes. Common types include the LD3 for widebody lower decks and the 88 × 125-inch flat pallet. Airlines, ground handling agents, and freight forwarders rely on ULDs to cut turnaround times, maximize payload, and prevent damage that would occur with loose-loaded individual pieces. Because the container's tare weight is deducted from the available payload budget, every gram saved on the ULD itself directly adds to usable freight capacity.
