A lifting chain is a steel link chain used to suspend and move heavy loads vertically or at an angle in industrial, port, and logistics environments. Certification by an accredited body establishes the chain's grade – commonly Grade 80 or Grade 100 – based on verified material composition, weld integrity, and load capacity; higher grades permit a greater Safe Working Load (SWL) at the same chain cross-section. The SWL is permanently marked on a tag attached to the chain. Periodic inspections, typically annual, check for wear, cracks, and permanent deformation that would increase the risk of failure under load. Lifting chains should not be confused with wire rope slings or textile webbing slings, which fall under different standards and inspection regimes.
