Where RoRo (Roll On / Roll Off) moves cargo aboard under its own power, LOLO – Lift On / Lift Off – relies entirely on cranes for every loading and discharging operation. Gantry cranes, ship-mounted derricks, or quayside equipment lift containers and break-bulk directly onto or off the vessel. LOLO is the global standard at container terminals and the only viable option for heavy, oversized, or non-self-propelled cargo. Because each unit is handled individually, port turnaround times and Terminal Handling Charges (THC) tend to run higher than at comparable RoRo facilities. The abbreviation LOLO is standard terminology across maritime shipping and container logistics worldwide.
