Lead time is the total duration from order placement to physical delivery of goods to the consignee, encompassing procurement, order processing, production or picking, transport, and customs clearance. In international trade, accurate lead time planning underpins inventory strategies, production scheduling, and contractual commitments – an overly optimistic estimate translates directly into stock-outs or penalty clauses. Lead time is not the same as transit time, which covers only the physical movement leg and is always a subset of the total lead time. Freight forwarders must factor in port waiting times, regulatory inspections, and the agreed Incoterms when quoting realistic lead times to their clients.
