A freight forwarder scheduling a shipment, pre-clearing customs, and coordinating warehouse handover is working against one number: lead time. Lead time is the total elapsed time from order placement or goods availability through to delivery at the destination. It encompasses far more than transit time alone – customs clearance, terminal dwell, transshipment handling, and internal process delays all count. In procurement, the clock starts when a purchase order is raised; in order fulfilment, at order confirmation. Shorter lead times typically demand faster and more expensive transport modes, tighter carrier agreements, and streamlined documentation. Not to be confused with transit time, which covers only the physical movement between two points.
