When a charter party is negotiated, the laycan period is one of the first commercial terms fixed, as it defines the window within which the vessel must present herself at the loading port ready to load. «Laycan» combines «laydays» – the earliest date the charterer is obliged to accept the vessel – and «canceling» – the latest date by which the ship must arrive. Should the vessel miss the canceling date, the charterer may cancel the charter without liability; the shipowner bears the delay risk entirely. Both parties therefore aim for a tight laycan to minimise idle port time and demurrage exposure. Laycan is distinct from laytime, which governs the permitted duration of cargo operations once the vessel has arrived and given notice of readiness.
