> The Last Free Day is the final calendar day a container may remain at an import terminal without demurrage charges being applied.

The Last Free Day is the final calendar day a container may remain at an import terminal without demurrage charges being applied. From the following day onward, the carrier or terminal operator levies daily fees. The length of this free period is defined in the bill of lading or the terminal tariff and varies by carrier, port, and container type. The consignee is responsible for collecting the container by this deadline or requesting an extension in advance. The Last Free Day should not be confused with the detention free period, which governs free time for container use outside the terminal – a separate charge regime entirely.
