When breakbulk cargo – non-containerised goods – is loaded onto ships, trucks, or rail wagons, lashing systems come into play. Webbing straps, steel chains, wire ropes, turnbuckles, and shackles, combined with fixed securing points on deck or loading surfaces, form a system that prevents shifting, tipping, and damage in transit. Unlike container transport, where the box itself encloses the load, every individual package or unit of breakbulk must be secured independently. The choice of system depends on the weight, centre of gravity, and geometry of the goods, as well as the transport mode and anticipated motion dynamics. At sea, the IMO CSS Code governs system design; in road and rail transport, the EN 12195 standard series applies.
